Organic Electrode Materials for Next-Generation Battery Applications
Abstract
Organic electrode materials (OEMs) are recently attracting considerable interest as a promising alternative to conventional transition-metal oxide electrode materials owing to their many advantages, including abundance, sustainability, bio-compatibility, low cost, and easy tunability. [1,2] In particular, the flexible nature of organic materials due to loosely packed intermolecular structures is expected to allow fast diffusion for charge-carrying ions, which is essential for achieving fast charging of batteries. However, in practice, most OEMs still suffer from slow rate performance with low capacity utilization due to their electrically insulating nature. They are also plagued by rapid capacity fading due to high solubility in the liquid electrolyte, compelling one to prepare polymers via complicated synthesis and/or to fabricate composites with expensive nanocarbons. What is worse, their operating voltages lie on impractical intermediate ranges (<3 V and 1 V vs. Li/Li + ) due to the redox mechanism.
In this talk, we will present our novel molecular design strategies to resolve those issues and thus to achieve high energy density, [3-9] cycle stability, [3,7,9-12] and rate performance [11,12] of OEMs for next-generation batteries.
